What Is Sarking?

Sarking is a reflective insulation membrane installed beneath roofing materials to improve thermal performance and provide an additional moisture barrier. Sarking is commonly fitted during new roof installations, reroofing projects, shed construction, and major renovations across Australian homes and commercial buildings. In Queensland and Northern NSW, sarking helps reduce radiant heat transfer from metal roofing during high summer temperatures while also assisting with condensation control during humid weather. Depending on the roof type and building design, sarking may be installed beneath Colorbond roofing, tile roofs, wall cladding, or insulated roofing systems in accordance with current Australian building requirements.

Why Is Sarking Important?

Without properly installed sarking, roof spaces can experience excessive heat build-up, moisture problems, and reduced insulation performance. In warmer regions like Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, and the Gold Coast, metal roofing can transfer significant radiant heat into living areas, increasing reliance on air conditioning and creating uneven indoor temperatures. Poor condensation management inside roof cavities may also lead to mould growth, damp insulation batts, timber deterioration, and corrosion around roof framing or fixings. Signs You Need Sarking

Condensation inside roof cavities, damp insulation, musty odours, or visible moisture around roof framing can also indicate missing or damaged sarking. Older homes undergoing reroofing work may have outdated foil products that no longer meet current standards or have deteriorated over time. In coastal areas around the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, salt air and humidity can increase condensation issues beneath roofing materials. Rising cooling costs, inconsistent indoor temperatures, and excessive roof cavity heat are also common signs that sarking may be needed.
